Tetley Strike Intensifies Due to Ongoing Pay Dispute
More than 150 workers at Tetley’s Tata Consumer Products in Teeside have intensified their strike action, demanding fairer pay after an unresolved dispute.
The predominantly female workforce, represented by the GMB Union, walked out on Friday, with plans for further strikes, including one on 10 October.
This is the first-ever strike action taken by Tetley workers, who have voiced frustration over what they describe as “pittance” wages. GMB organiser Paul Clark criticized the company’s management, accusing them of failing to pay a fair wage while workers continue to contribute to Tetley’s success as a leading tea brand.

The dispute comes after workers had accepted a pay offer in August 2023, which the union argued was insufficient and still “a long way from justice.” The union has vowed to continue pushing for a fair pay rise, emphasizing that the workers will not back down until their demands are met.
Tensions between the workers and management have also escalated, with GMB alleging that during previous actions, the company called the police, accusing the striking women of intimidation. Additionally, Tetley has now filed a lawsuit against the workers for trespassing, further fueling the conflict.
