Metro, Inc. has officially opened a new automated distribution center for fresh products in Toronto, marking a significant milestone in the Canadian grocer’s supply chain modernization efforts. This project, which began in 2017, is part of a broader strategy that includes the launch of an automated fresh and frozen distribution center in Terrebonne, Quebec, which opened in 2023. Additionally, Metro has expanded its fresh produce distribution center in Laval, Quebec, and built two new distribution centers in Toronto, including a frozen facility that became operational in 2022.

Eric La Fleche, Metro’s president and CEO, emphasized the importance of these developments, stating, “Our new automated distribution centers as well as the expansion of one of our facilities represent a substantial investment in Metro’s future.” He noted that the transformation of their supply chain is aimed at enhancing capacity for future growth and efficiency, solidifying Metro’s market position, and creating new opportunities for employees.

Metro operates 980 food stores across Canada under various banners, including Metro, Metro Plus, Super C, Food Basics, Adonis, and Premiere Moisson. The company also runs 640 pharmacies, primarily under the Jean Coutu name, highlighting its extensive footprint in the Canadian retail landscape.
