SNAP Benefits May Soon Cover More Dairy Products
Lawmakers Propose SNAP Dairy Expansion to Boost Nutrition and Support Farmers
New Bill Aims to Improve Dairy Access for Low-Income Families
Congress is pushing for a SNAP Dairy Expansion to make milk, cheese, and yogurt more affordable for struggling families.
Dairy Incentives Target Health and Agriculture
The Dairy Nutrition Incentive Program Act would extend the existing Healthy Fluid Milk Incentives program to cover more dairy products.
When SNAP recipients buy qualifying dairy items, they would receive coupons for additional yogurt or cheese at checkout.
Bipartisan Support for Healthier Choices
Support comes from both sides of the aisle, including Rep. Jim Costa and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who stress dairy’s nutritional importance.
Costa, representing Tulare County—the top dairy-producing region—said the plan ensures families receive essential nutrients while aiding local farms.
More Changes Coming for SNAP
The SNAP Dairy Expansion follows the proposed Hot Foods Act, which would allow hot meal purchases with SNAP benefits.
That bill would remove restrictions preventing recipients from buying rotisserie chickens, hot sandwiches, and soups.
SNAP Budget Under Pressure
At the same time, House Republicans want to cut SNAP funding by up to $150 billion over ten years.
Their budget plan could shift some costs to states, which are also reviewing which items SNAP should cover.
Kansas and South Carolina aim to remove soda and candy, and Idaho lawmakers passed a similar bill awaiting the governor’s approval.
Policy Shifts Could Impact Retailers
Any funding cuts or restrictions could significantly impact grocers who serve SNAP customers daily.
