Ahold Delhaize USA Reports Data Breach Affecting 2 Million People
Ahold Delhaize USA Confirms Massive Data Breach Impacting 2.2 Million People
Ahold Delhaize USA revealed a serious cybersecurity incident that exposed personal data of more than 2 million individuals.
Sensitive Information Compromised in Cyberattack
In late 2024, hackers accessed sensitive data through the company’s online systems. The Ahold Delhaize data breach compromised personal records.
Information included Social Security numbers, bank details, birthdays, health records, and workers’ compensation files.
This breach affected current and former employees, their dependents, and eligible beneficiaries. The company issued notifications last Thursday.
It stated that unauthorized access occurred on November 5 and 6. Nearly 100,000 residents of Maine were among the victims.
Despite the attack’s reach, Ahold Delhaize USA confirmed that customer payment and pharmacy systems stayed secure.
This clarification came through a detailed FAQ on the company’s website.
Company Offers Identity Protection
To respond quickly, Ahold Delhaize USA promised two years of credit monitoring and identity protection services.
However, the company did not announce additional remedies for impacted individuals.
Ahold Delhaize stressed that it takes security seriously and plans to strengthen its system defenses.
The breach forced a temporary shutdown of several online platforms, disrupting services for banners like Food Lion, Giant Food, and Stop & Shop.
Additionally, Hannaford’s e-commerce operations halted during the cyberattack. Some websites also faced brief outages.
The parent company, based in the Netherlands, acknowledged that the breach also affected Dutch citizens.
Inc Ransom Claims Responsibility
A cybercriminal group named Inc Ransom claimed responsibility for the Ahold Delhaize data breach.
The group’s attack forced the company to act fast and take several systems offline.
The impact was significant, not just in the U.S., but globally.
In April, Ahold Delhaize revealed that data from individuals in the Netherlands had also been compromised.
The breach happened just before another cyberattack hit United Natural Foods Inc.
UNFI experienced system shutdowns, delaying its ability to deliver to retail clients. But operations have since resumed.
Moving Forward After the Breach
Ahold Delhaize USA continues investigating the incident and upgrading its cybersecurity infrastructure.
It remains committed to transparency and protecting sensitive information against future threats.
Although the Ahold Delhaize data breach caused serious concern, the company’s prompt communication helped reduce confusion.
Still, many affected individuals await further action or assistance from the grocery chain.
