Dollar General Opens New Store in Tiny Hartly, Delaware
Dollar General Opens New DG Market in Small Town Hartly
Dollar General Hartly Store Brings Fresh Food and Jobs to Tiny Delaware Community
The Dollar General Hartly store has officially opened its doors, bringing groceries and jobs to Delaware’s smallest incorporated town. Although Hartly has just 78 residents, its business scene continues to grow thanks to the arrival of a full-size DG Market.
Located directly across from a long-standing Family Dollar, the new store offers something unique—fresh meat and produce. This makes it a welcome addition for locals who previously had to travel 10 miles to Dover for groceries.
A Store That Fits the Town’s Needs
Unlike typical locations, this DG Market is larger and more stocked. It spans up to 16,000 square feet and includes essentials not offered by smaller stores. Even better, the store created 10 to 15 new jobs—about 5% of Hartly’s population.
This is the fourth Dollar General to open in Kent County in the past year. Clearly, the retailer sees promise in smaller markets.
Growth Continues Despite Rising Costs
Dollar General currently runs over 20,500 stores across the country. In just the first quarter of 2025, the company opened 156 new locations.
Construction costs have jumped more than 40% over the past six years, yet Dollar General remains aggressive in expansion. The company plans to open nearly 600 new stores by the end of 2025.
The Dollar General Hartly store reflects this strategy. It is one of the growing number of DG Markets that provide fresh food and serve as hybrid grocery outlets.
Strong Financial Performance Fuels Expansion
Dollar General’s recent numbers show why expansion continues at this pace. In Q1 2025, net sales rose by 5.3%, reaching $10.4 billion. Same-store sales increased 2.4%.
CEO Todd Vasos explained that new shoppers in 2025 are visiting more often and spending more per trip. These patterns give Dollar General more confidence to grow, especially with the larger DG Market model.
Bigger Stores for Bigger Needs
Most new stores will follow the DG Market blueprint. These range from 8,500 to 16,000 square feet—much bigger than the traditional 7,500-square-foot stores.
In fact, more than 80% of 2025’s planned store openings will use the larger format. The company also plans to upgrade nearly all relocations to these expanded footprints.
During a recent earnings call, Vasos said these bigger stores generate better sales per square foot. They also help the retailer serve customers with a wider product range.
The Dollar General Hartly store shows this model in action. It’s not just about size—it’s about meeting the needs of local communities more effectively.
