AIMS Criticizes Government for Neglecting Halal Meat Export Support
AIMS Urges Action on Halal Meat Export Support
Industry Leaders Say UK Risks Losing Global Halal Market Opportunities
AIMS has strongly criticized the UK Government for lacking Halal meat export support, despite the sector’s growing international demand.
This warning comes as producers stress that British Halal meat meets the highest global standards yet lacks trade backing.
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) wants Halal meat included in the UK’s trade, food, and export strategies.
Without proper recognition, post-Brexit growth in this segment may stall, harming one of the UK’s strongest export opportunities.
Dr. Jason Aldiss, AIMS executive director, highlighted that Halal meat is far from a niche.
He called it a major growth area with increasing demand from the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
Call for Strategic Support and Sector Recognition
AIMS and partners are urging ministers to launch a clear Halal meat export support development strategy.
They believe this includes funding Halal assurance schemes and direct engagement with Muslim communities across the UK.
Dr. Aldiss stated that British producers can offer fully traceable, high-welfare Halal meat aligned with global standards.
However, without formal government support, buyers may look to other countries with better-backed exporters.
Unlike whisky, cheese, or gin, Halal meat still lacks government promotion despite being FSA-regulated and often pre-stunned.
This absence puts British producers at a disadvantage in a fast-growing market.
Halal Market Set to Surpass $3 Trillion by 2028
The global Halal market could reach $3.27 trillion by 2028, offering vast export potential for UK food producers.
AIMS warns that time is running out for the UK to secure its position in this high-value sector.
They emphasize that halal standards go hand-in-hand with quality, hygiene, and food safety, areas where UK suppliers already excel.
Yet, support remains minimal and inconsistent.
AIMS calls on the Government to recognize Halal meat as a strategic asset and act before international competitors dominate the market.
In doing so, the UK can protect jobs, boost exports, and strengthen global food sector leadership.
