How Vending Kiosks Reduce Store Shrink and Improve Labor Efficiency
Cantaloupe, Inc., a leading tech company, has expanded its self-service vending machine offerings with the introduction of the Smart Store 600 and 700 models. These innovative kiosks are designed to provide retailers with a convenient in-store option while addressing key challenges like labor efficiency, shrink, and theft. The machines are part of Cantaloupe’s Smart Store series and can be used to sell both shelf-stable and fresh items, offering greater flexibility for businesses.
These self-service vending machines have already been installed in a wide range of locations, including corporate offices, residential buildings, hotel pantries, and grocery and mass retail stores. The Smart Store units are equipped with advanced features such as weighted shelves and cameras to monitor inventory levels. Additionally, interactive touchscreens, audio assistance, and visual cues guide shoppers in selecting their desired products, enhancing the overall shopping experience.
Jeff Dumbrell, chief revenue officer at Cantaloupe, explained that these vending kiosks can create new sales opportunities for retailers while also optimizing store operations. One significant benefit of the Smart Store kiosks is their ability to significantly reduce shrink, a long-standing issue for retailers. “One of the lingering issues with retailers has been theft. Smart Store significantly reduces shrink. We had one customer who went from 12% theft to 0%,” said Dumbrell.
The technology works by allowing customers to approach the glass-front unit, swipe a credit or debit card, or use Google Pay to unlock the cooler. Once unlocked, the customer can select a product, such as a sandwich or bottled water. The weight sensors in the machine automatically detect the item taken, and if the wrong item is chosen, the customer can put it back. This system not only reduces theft but also helps manage labor costs effectively.
In addition to minimizing shrink and improving labor efficiency, Smart Store kiosks enhance the customer experience. Dumbrell shared an example from midtown Manhattan, where the kiosks helped reduce long lunch lines. “With the Smart Store, they can add pre-packaged chips, a drink, and a sandwich for $10 that people can grab, scan, and go,” he said. These kiosks can also be used in conventional grocery stores to sell high-cost items like razors and makeup.
The Smart Store models provide valuable data insights for retailers, helping them track customer behavior and make informed decisions on inventory replenishment. Through Cantaloupe’s backend system, retailers can receive real-time alerts on what’s selling and what needs restocking, allowing for improved inventory management.
Currently available in the United States and Canada, the Smart Store units will soon be expanded to Mexico and the United Kingdom. In addition to vending kiosks, Cantaloupe offers other solutions, including micro-payment processing, self-checkout kiosks, mobile ordering, connected point-of-sale systems, and enterprise cloud software.
