Beef and lamb sales soared in January, contributing to a 4.5% overall pound gain. Beef volume rose 7.9%, driven by ground beef sales. Lamb experienced a 10.3% increase as shoppers embraced diverse meat cooking trends.
Processed Meat and Poultry Gains
Processed meats continued gaining popularity. Chicken sales increased by 15.5%, while hot dogs rose 10.3%. Frozen poultry also performed well, with frozen turkey up 14.5% and frozen chicken climbing 11.6%.
Seafood and Produce Performance
Seafood showed resilience, with fresh seafood rising 0.5% and frozen seafood gaining 0.4%. Finfish sales increased by 1.7%, while shrimp sales rose 2.8% despite a price drop. Mangoes surged 162.9%, and kiwis gained 34% in sales.
Refrigerated and Frozen Trends
Despite egg prices rising, refrigerated foods gained 3% in sales. Cottage cheese grew 14.5%, while yogurt and whipped toppings also performed well. Frozen processed chicken climbed 8.6%, further supporting evolving meat cooking trends.
Deli and Plant-Based Struggles
Deli prepared meats gained 8.2%, but deli meat sales fell 6%. Plant-based meat alternatives showed slight improvement but still trail past performance levels.
