Save A Lot Revamp: Major Overhaul Brings New Life to Neighborhood Stores

The Save A Lot revamp is making significant strides in improving grocery access in food deserts. The retailer is reopening its store in Chicago’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood this Thursday. This initiative is part of a larger effort to modernize multiple locations and provide fresh, affordable food to underserved communities.

Overcoming Challenges and Delays

The Save A Lot revamp faced multiple delays and challenges. Yellow Banana, the Cleveland-based retail grocery company operating these stores, secured over $26 million in subsidies. The city of Chicago contributed $13.5 million, ensuring these grocery stores remain accessible to residents. However, underestimated repairs caused delays, requiring essential upgrades such as:

  • New flooring and lighting installations
  • Updated equipment and HVAC systems
  • Modernized dairy and meat cases
  • Fresh paint, fixtures, and signage

Unexpected subsurface conditions at the Auburn Gresham store added further setbacks. Despite these obstacles, the reopening is now on schedule, bringing renewed energy to the community.

Community Engagement and Local Partnerships

Yellow Banana actively involved the community in the Save A Lot revamp. The company hosted town hall meetings and fairs to gather feedback. Additionally, they partnered with local suppliers to feature regionally sourced products in these refreshed stores.

The retailer remains committed to maintaining these stores for at least ten years. Failure to do so would require Yellow Banana to return the subsidies received. This long-term investment aims to create sustainable grocery access for residents.

More Locations Set to Open Soon

A sixth store at 4439 West 63rd Street in Chicago is set to reopen later this quarter. These strategic renovations solidify Save A Lot’s commitment to serving food-insecure neighborhoods.
