Walmart+ Overtakes Amazon Prime in Grocery Market: Walmart vs Amazon Groceries

Why Walmart Leads in Grocery Preferences

The battle between Walmart vs Amazon groceries has intensified as consumer preferences evolve rapidly across subscription and shopping habits. Despite Amazon Prime’s popularity, Walmart+ is winning where it matters—grocery purchases.

A recent PYMNTS Intelligence survey shows shoppers increasingly subscribe to both services. However, Walmart dominates when it comes to actual grocery spending.

Consumers Prefer Walmart for Grocery Needs

The survey revealed that 29.9% of respondents made their most recent grocery purchase from Walmart. Only 1.3% chose Amazon.

Even among dual subscribers, most turn to Walmart for food items. The numbers speak clearly—Walmart holds a solid lead in groceries.

Furthermore, 57.5% of Walmart+ exclusive users made their last grocery buy at Walmart. None said they used Amazon for that trip.

Millennials and Lower-Income Shoppers Drive Growth

Millennials lead the trend, with 37% subscribing to both Amazon Prime and Walmart+. They value variety and convenience from each service.

Meanwhile, lower-income shoppers tend to favor Walmart+. Among those earning under $50,000, 6.5% subscribe to Walmart+ without Amazon Prime.

That group benefits from Walmart+’s affordability and perks like free same-day delivery, fuel savings, and grocery discounts.

Delivery Race Gets More Competitive

Walmart plans to reach 95% of U.S. households with deliveries in under three hours. That’s a bold move for market dominance.

Amazon, in response, has increased its same-day facilities by 60% and will expand further in 2025. The delivery war continues.

Each platform enhances speed and reach to attract loyalty from busy shoppers looking for convenience and reliability.

Subscription Cost and Benefits Comparison

Walmart+ costs $12.95 monthly or $98 yearly. Government program participants receive additional savings and added perks.

The subscription includes free same-day grocery delivery, Paramount+ streaming, gas discounts, and deals at Burger King.

Amazon Prime costs $14.99 monthly or $139 annually. It includes Prime Video, free same-day delivery, and fuel discounts.

Still, Amazon’s grocery market share remains limited. Its strengths lie in discretionary online retail—not food.

Final Take: Which Service Wins on Groceries?

In the ongoing Walmart vs Amazon groceries competition, Walmart+ clearly wins in consumer grocery habits. Shoppers want speed, convenience, and savings.
