Whole Foods Pledges Stronger Seafood Labor Protections

Whole Foods Market Introduces New Seafood Labor Code of Conduct
Whole Foods Market has launched a new initiative to enhance labor protections across its global seafood supply chain. The company’s updated policy, known as the “Seafood Code of Conduct,” sets higher ethical standards and strengthens transparency. This move demonstrates Whole Foods’ commitment to improving conditions for workers in the seafood industry.
Whole Foods Seafood Labor Code Aligns with Global Standards
The Whole Foods Seafood Labor policy is based on internationally recognized labor standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the International Labour Organization’s Work in Fishing Convention. It applies to all seafood suppliers, including fresh, frozen, canned, and sushi providers.
Key Aspects of the New Code:
- Working Hours and Time at Sea: Fishing vessels must comply with ILO Fishing Convention standards and return to port at least every 11 months.
- Ethical Recruitment Practices: Suppliers cannot charge recruitment fees, and employment contracts must be clear and fair.
- Crew Communication Access: Crew members must have the ability to contact family, NGOs, and worker representatives. Wi-Fi access is strongly recommended.
- Health and Safety Measures: Workers must receive safety training, protective equipment, medical care, and sufficient food and water during voyages.
Industry-Wide Efforts to Improve Seafood Labor Conditions
Whole Foods Market collaborates with Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch to advocate for stricter labor protections. They are pushing for electronic vessel monitoring and improved crew welfare policies within the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
Other major retailers are also taking action. Hy-Vee implemented a seafood supplier code of conduct in 2021, ensuring all suppliers meet ethical labor standards. Walmart and Sam’s Club revised their seafood policies in 2023, enhancing transparency in their tuna supply chains.
Whole Foods Initiative Supports Industry Sustainability
Whole Foods Market has joined Walmart and Albertsons in signing The Nature Conservancy’s Tuna Transparency Pledge. This commitment ensures on-the-water monitoring for all industrial tuna fishing vessels by 2027, promoting accountability and sustainability in the seafood industry.
Whole Foods continues to lead in ethical sourcing, setting a precedent for the entire industry.
