Amazon is set to expand its pharmacy operations significantly in 2025, planning to open 20 new pharmacies strategically located at its Same-Day Delivery sites. This move comes as traditional pharmacy chains face closures and bankruptcy, positioning Amazon to capture a larger share of the pharmaceutical market.

The new pharmacy locations will enhance Amazon’s ability to provide rapid medication delivery, with cities like Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and San Diego already announced as potential sites. Dr. Vin Gupta, Amazon Pharmacy’s chief medical officer, highlighted the importance of timely medication delivery for patient care, noting that immediate access can significantly improve health outcomes.

By the end of 2025, Amazon aims to make prescription services accessible to nearly 45% of U.S. customers through its same-day delivery program. This initiative is particularly crucial as the company addresses the growing issue of “pharmacy deserts,” where closures of local pharmacies have left many communities without convenient access to medications.

Amazon’s approach emphasizes the contrast with traditional mail-in prescription services, which can take up to ten days for delivery. The company aims to bridge the accessibility gap created by pharmacy closures, ensuring customers receive their medications quickly and efficiently.

John Love, VP of Amazon Pharmacy, emphasized that the company employs a significant number of pharmacists to oversee clinical care and support its expanding pharmacy operations. The new pharmacies will complement Amazon Pharmacy’s existing fulfillment centers, focusing on recurring prescription orders and rapid deliveries to metropolitan areas.
