This store closure, which impacted 48 workers, is part of a larger transition where approximately 50 Winn-Dixie locations will be transformed into Aldi stores by the end of 2024. Aldi’s acquisition of Southeastern Grocers’ Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores—amounting to around 400 locations across five states—was announced in August 2023.

Former Winn-Dixie employees at the Lakeland store have been given priority for job applications at the new Aldi location or can transfer to nearby Winn-Dixie stores before their closure. Aldi is committed to a seamless conversion process, with CEO Jason Hart stating that the company’s extensive experience in store openings and remodels will ensure a smooth transition.

The move is part of Aldi’s broader expansion strategy in the U.S. and comes as Aldi continues to grow its footprint in the southeastern region.
