German discount grocer Aldi is intensifying its U.S. expansion with the opening of four new stores on October 17, including a key location in Lecanto, Florida. The Lecanto Aldi, strategically positioned between a Target and a Walmart Supercenter, is located near the intersection of W. Norvell Bryant Hwy and N. Lecanto Hwy, making it a prime spot for competition.

In close proximity to the new Aldi is a Winn-Dixie store in Beverly Hills, Fla., which was acquired by Aldi in early 2024 as part of its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers. This opening marks Aldi’s first store in Lecanto and sets the stage for a competitive holiday season.

Ahead of Thanksgiving, Aldi has already taken aim at competitors like Target and Walmart by announcing its lowest-priced Thanksgiving basket since 2019. For under $47, customers can purchase a meal that feeds 10 people, including a Butterball turkey, rolls, mac and cheese, stuffing, and ingredients for classic sides like mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Aldi CEO Jason Hart noted that as grocery prices remain a concern for consumers, the company is focused on providing value. “We know grocery prices are still top of mind for customers,” said Hart, adding that a quarter of U.S. households now shop at Aldi.

Aldi is pushing forward with its goal to open 800 stores by the end of 2028, part of an ambitious growth strategy that includes the acquisition of roughly 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores, particularly in the southeastern U.S. Through this expansion, the discount grocer is working to strengthen its footprint in states like Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida.

While the fate of many acquired stores remains uncertain, Aldi has already begun converting some Winn-Dixie locations, such as a store in Lakeland, Fla., which was remodeled and reopened as an Aldi in 2023. Hart confirmed that a “significant” number of stores will be rebranded, though some will continue to operate under the Winn-Dixie and Harveys banners.

As Aldi continues to remodel and open new stores across the U.S., its commitment to offering low prices and quality products is expected to resonate with shoppers in Lecanto and beyond.
