CVS Closes 19 Stores as Dollar Stores Rapidly Expand Across the U.S.
In the second half of August, dollar stores continued their rapid expansion across the U.S., with Dollar General and Dollar Tree opening more than 100 new locations combined.
At the same time, CVS reported the closure of 19 stores, marking the highest number of closures among major retailers. The pharmacy chain did open four new locations during this period, but the closures far outweighed the openings.
Dollar General led the way, opening 62 new stores across regions including the Midwest, South, Southwest, and Northeast, while closing eight locations. Dollar Tree opened 44 stores, mostly in California, and closed five, primarily in the Northeast.
Other notable changes included Food Lion, which closed nine stores across Southern states such as Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, and Aldi, which continued its steady growth with six new stores. BJ’s Wholesale Club also opened six new locations in the same timeframe.
