DoorDash Introduces Alcohol Delivery in Maryland
DoorDash has officially expanded its alcohol delivery services to Maryland, marking a significant milestone for the last-mile delivery service. This expansion, announced on Monday, follows the implementation of a new state law that took effect on July 1, allowing online liquor purchases and home delivery.
“Whether it’s locally brewed craft beers or bottles of beloved wines, we hope that this new offering can showcase the best that Maryland has to offer,” said Erik Ragotte, DoorDash’s general manager of alcohol and convenience. He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting local merchants, creating new earning opportunities for Dashers, and maintaining strict safety standards through DoorDash’s best-in-class alcohol delivery protocols.
Meeting Consumer Demand for Alcohol Delivery
DoorDash revealed strong customer demand for alcohol delivery, citing its 2024 Alcohol Ordering Trends report. According to the survey, nearly 90% of respondents had used a delivery service for alcohol in the past year.
Since launching alcohol delivery in 2021, DoorDash has rapidly grown its footprint in this market. The company now offers access to over 100,000 alcoholic beverages across thousands of stores in 33 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. DoorDash claims the title of U.S. category share leader for third-party liquor sales, according to a report by Edison Trends.
A Growing Market for Alcohol Delivery
The entry into Maryland aligns with the broader trend of growth in alcohol delivery. Competitors such as Uber Eats and Instacart have also been expanding their liquor delivery services. Meanwhile, grocery chains like Walmart, Aldi, and Costco are enhancing their own offerings in the sector.
DoorDash’s move into Maryland’s alcohol market underscores the increasing consumer reliance on convenience and last-mile delivery services. With a focus on supporting local businesses and expanding product variety, DoorDash continues to position itself as a leader in the fast-growing alcohol delivery category.
