In a recent move to help shoppers cope with inflation, Giant Eagle announced a 20% average price reduction on over 200 produce items, marking the second time in just four months the retailer has cut prices. This latest initiative is part of a broader strategy to support customers by offering more affordable grocery options. The O’Hara Township, Pa.-based grocer previously launched its “Deals for Days” campaign in May, cutting prices on more than 1,000 items, and the program will continue throughout the rest of 2024.

Some of the produce items included in this latest round of price cuts are:

  • Jumbo navel oranges (reduced from $1.25 each to $1)
  • Large avocados (reduced from $2 each to $1.50)
  • Seedless cucumbers (reduced from $2.50 each to $2)
  • Broccoli (reduced from $4.99 each to $2.99)
  • Stem or hydroponic tomatoes (reduced from $2.99 per pound to $2.49)
  • Jumbo baking potatoes or yams (reduced from $1.99 per pound to $1.49)
  • Giant Eagle whole white mushrooms (reduced from $2.99 per 8-ounce pack to $2.49)
  • Giant Eagle petite or matchstick carrots (reduced from $3.29 per bag to $1.99)
  • Giant Eagle and Taylor Farms chopped salad kits and salad bowls (reduced from $3.99 each to $3.33)

This reduction in produce prices is part of a larger trend across the grocery industry aimed at enticing inflation-sensitive shoppers to visit stores more frequently and purchase larger quantities. Retailers, like SpartanNashTarget, and Walgreens, have also recently lowered prices in an attempt to boost customer engagement. SpartanNash, for instance, announced price cuts on 6,000 items after disappointing second-quarter earnings. Similarly, Target slashed prices on 1,500 products, while Walgreens offered discounts on 1,300 items and launched a special loyalty program in mid-July.

This wave of price reductions is a response to the rising cost of living and is intended to provide shoppers with more affordable options in their grocery shopping experience.
