The state of Illinois is making DMV services more convenient with the launch of a new pilot program that allows residents to renew driver’s licenses, state IDs, and purchase vehicle stickers at grocery stores. Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced that 15 “Fast-Lane” kiosks have been installed at select supermarkets across the state as part of this initiative.

Six of these kiosks are located at Jewel-Osco and Mariano’s stores in Chicago, while six more are spread across suburban Chicago locations, including Meijer, Mariano’s, and Jewel-Osco. Additionally, kiosks have been set up at a Kroger in East Peoria, a Meijer in Springfield, and a Ruler Foods in Fairview Heights.

“Fast-Lane kiosks offer added convenience for Illinois drivers who now have the ability to renew their driver’s license or purchase a vehicle sticker while they’re running errands or buying their groceries,” Giannoulias said in a press release. The average transaction at these kiosks takes just about two minutes, offering a quick alternative to waiting in line at the DMV.

The program is part of the state’s effort to modernize services, reduce wait times, and provide options for those who may not have access to online services or struggle with restrictive schedules that make DMV visits difficult. According to the press release, kiosk renewals are more affordable compared to services at currency exchanges or emission testing sites.
