Big Y Pharmacy Coverage Removed by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield

Big Y Pharmacy coverage has officially been removed by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield in Connecticut. Anthem, the state’s largest health insurance provider, no longer includes Big Y pharmacies in its network. Neither Big Y nor Anthem has provided public statements regarding this decision.

Impact on Grocery Stores and Patients

Anthem emphasized that it regularly reviews pharmacy networks to maintain affordability and access to quality care. However, some patients expressed frustration, noting that the alternative pharmacies suggested by Anthem were either recently closed or located much farther away than their local Big Y pharmacy.

Growing Pharmacy Closures Nationwide

The removal of Big Y Pharmacy coverage comes amid a broader trend of pharmacy closures across the country. Last year, CVS shut down nine locations in Connecticut, while Walgreens closed two stores. Rite Aid also shuttered 12 locations in the state. These closures have made it increasingly difficult for many patients to access medications conveniently.

Cost-Cutting Measures in Health Insurance

Health insurers are continuously seeking ways to reduce costs. This trend has led to the removal of certain medications from coverage. For instance, some insurers recently stopped covering GLP-1 diabetes drugs, which have become popular for weight loss. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan recently announced that it would no longer cover GLP-1 obesity drugs under specific plans starting this year.

Big Y Pharmacy’s Continued Efforts

Big Y first launched its pharmacy services in 2001 and now operates pharmacies in more than half of its 75 stores. In June, the company introduced a pharmacy mobile app to enhance patient care. Despite Anthem’s decision, 18 Big Y pharmacies in Massachusetts remain covered under Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, as per the insurer’s latest 2025 pharmacy directory.
