Out-of-Stock Eggs: Rising Prices and Shopper Frustration

A recent survey from Numerator reveals that rising egg prices are worrying consumers. Many shoppers face frustration due to out-of-stock eggs at grocery stores.

Shoppers Feel the Price Increase

According to the survey, 71% of shoppers say eggs are expensive in their area. The avian flu outbreak since 2022 has significantly increased egg prices. In the Midwest, 39% of shoppers report eggs as particularly costly.

Egg prices rose by 47% in 2024 compared to the previous year. On average, shoppers are willing to pay up to $4.90 for a dozen eggs. However, 68% of consumers prefer to pay between $3 and $5. Price sensitivity varies by store. For example, Aldi shoppers are comfortable paying $3.83, while Albertsons shoppers accept prices up to $5.21.

Out-of-Stock Eggs Disrupt Shopping Habits

Many Stores Experience Egg Shortages

In addition to higher prices, 55% of shoppers report seeing out-of-stock eggs at their usual supermarkets. The Western states are hit hardest, with 70% of shoppers noticing empty egg shelves. This scarcity forces 48% of consumers to skip buying eggs when their preferred store runs out.

Consumers Still Depend on Eggs

Eggs Remain a Household Staple

Despite stock shortages and rising prices, eggs remain essential for many households. Breakfast remains the top use for eggs, with 86% of shoppers prioritizing them for morning meals. Other common uses include baking (68%), snacking and meals (45%), and as a protein source (43%).

How to Adapt to Egg Shortages

With ongoing price increases and stock shortages, consumers must adjust their shopping habits. Buying in bulk, exploring local farms, or considering egg substitutes can help.
