Rite Aid Closes 171 Locations in Ohio and Michigan
Rite Aid has closed 171 locations in Michigan and Ohio, significantly affecting these regions after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023. The closures, 101 in Michigan and 68 in Ohio, are part of the company’s broader effort to reduce its brick-and-mortar presence, with plans to shutter 110 stores across these states as outlined in court filings earlier this year.
This reduction is part of a larger trend among pharmacy chains facing financial difficulties. Walgreens and CVS also closed a combined 33 locations in September, with Walgreens shutting down 17 stores and CVS closing 16.
The store closures are contrasted by the continued growth of discount retailers, with Dollar Tree opening 85 new locations and Dollar General opening 11 stores in September. Aldi also continued its expansion with seven new store openings during the same period. These developments highlight the evolving retail landscape, with some sectors shrinking while discount retailers gain momentum.
