Tesco Expiring Food Giveaway Tackles Waste and Helps Shoppers

New Trial Offers Free Food to Cut Waste and Support Communities

Tesco has launched a new Tesco expiring food giveaway to reduce waste and support those in need during tough economic times.

The supermarket giant will test this initiative in select Express stores, giving away “yellow sticker” discounted items for free after 9:30 p.m.

How the Giveaway Will Work

Tesco will first offer the items to charities and staff. Then, remaining goods will become available for customers at no cost.

The company has already donated food to foodbanks and charities. This new move strengthens its goal to halve food waste completely.

A First for UK Supermarkets

While other chains offer deep discounts on near-expiry items, Tesco’s plan goes one step further. It’s the UK’s first direct-to-customer giveaway.

This bold step aligns with its net-zero emissions goal. Previously, Tesco claimed a 45% waste cut, but later revised it to 18%.

Helping During Cost of Living Crisis

Inflation has pushed food and utility prices higher. Over seven million people in the UK now face food insecurity, skipping meals regularly.

Tesco hopes the Tesco expiring food giveaway will help customers who are struggling while also fighting unnecessary food waste.

Strong Sales Back Social Impact Effort

Despite economic challenges, Tesco recently posted strong holiday sales and reclaimed the highest grocery market share since 2016.

Their growing customer base might find more reasons to stay loyal as the brand commits to both sustainability and community.
