Tesco has announced a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with its milk suppliers, Arla and Müller, to launch the Future Dairy Partnership, a farmer-led effort to advance sustainable practices in the dairy industry. This partnership aims to cut on-farm emissions by 30% by 2030, uniting efforts across the supply chain to create meaningful change.

The partnership will include all 400 farmers in Tesco’s Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) and will expand by seeking input and support from other stakeholders in the dairy sector. Building on the existing TSDG, which integrates milk pools from Arla and Müller, this initiative emphasizes collaboration to accelerate the reduction of emissions.

Key focus areas include:

  • Innovation in on-farm projects, such as the trial and implementation of methane-reducing feed additives.
  • Guidance through industry reports and a sustainable dairy blueprint, offering farmers clear sustainability goals and ethical guidelines.
  • Collaboration through a dedicated farmer focus group, fostering knowledge-sharing and the exploration of new sustainability levers.

Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s chief commercial officer, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating:

“To achieve our climate and nature goals, we must work together as an industry to implement transformational improvements at pace. We’re thrilled to partner with Arla and Müller on this project, ensuring farmers remain central to this progress.”

With this initiative, Tesco reaffirms its commitment to leading the transition toward low-carbon agriculture while supporting its farmers in pioneering sustainable dairy practices.
