The Blue Zones Project Grocery Store Commitment
The Blue Zones are regions around the world where people live significantly longer and healthier lives. Popularized by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and founder of the Blue Zones Project, these areas have become models for longevity. Buettner identified five such regions:
- Okinawa (Japan)
- Sardinia (Italy)
- Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica)
- Ikaria (Greece)
- Loma Linda (California, U.S.A.)
These regions have the highest concentration of people living to 100 years or older. In his research, Buettner and his team identified “the power 9” — a set of diet and lifestyle habits shared by the people of Blue Zones that contribute to their exceptional health and longevity.
The Power 9
These habits, including plant-based diets, active lifestyles, strong social connections, and healthy coping mechanisms, have been proven to reduce the risks of chronic diseases and increase life expectancy. In the U.S., where the average lifespan is 77.5 years and many adults suffer from chronic illnesses, adopting aspects of the Blue Zones’ habits can promote healthier, longer lives.
Local Blue Zone Projects®
Blue Zones Projects® are community-driven initiatives designed to implement the Blue Zones’ principles in local environments. These projects aim to make healthy choices easier for people through permanent changes in urban planning, local policies, and community programs. Successful implementation has led to reduced rates of obesity, smoking, and healthcare costs, according to Kris Bio, the organization and well-being coordinator for Blue Zones Scottsdale.
Grocery Store Pledge
The Blue Zones Project Grocery Store Pledge encourages grocery retailers to promote healthier eating habits among customers while maintaining profitability. Retailers who sign up to the pledge demonstrate a commitment to supporting community health initiatives and helping local cities become Blue Zones communities. These stores work to:
- Promote foods for longevity
- Encourage healthier shopping habits
- Create an environment that supports better lifestyle choices
By becoming approved participants, stores signal their dedication to making a positive community impact and supporting sustainable health practices.
Merchandising and Global Cuisine
Grocery stores can highlight foods for longevity, such as plant-based ingredients, leafy greens, whole grains, and beans (including soy), which are staples in the Blue Zones diet. In addition to fresh produce, retailers can offer healthy, globally inspired prepared meals that align with the Blue Zones approach to eating. Featuring easy-prep recipes and one-stop shopping solutions can further promote these healthier options.
