Costco is known for stocking rare and high-end liquors, and recently, a lucky customer in La Mesa, California, discovered a limited-edition bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey on the shelves. This was no ordinary bottle, but the 2024 Special Release Single Barrel Coy Hill High Proof — the third edition of the distillery’s highest proof whiskey, following the 2021 and 2022 releases.

Bottled at a barrel strength with proofs ranging from 122 to 137.5 (approximately 65.35% ABV), the Coy Hill High Proof whiskey is a standout. Unlike previous releases, which were stored in the attic of the barrelhouse, this 2024 batch was aged on the fifth and sixth floors, where the barrels experienced less heat and fewer environmental fluctuations, resulting in a surprisingly smooth flavor despite the high proof. The whiskey is over 10 years old, and its delicate profile has earned comparisons to the coveted Pappy Van Winkle.

The bottle, priced at just $70 at Costco, sold out in less than 45 minutes, a testament to the demand for this rare release. It quickly became a sought-after collectors’ item, with resellers listing bottles on the secondary market for anywhere between $500 to $800. The 2021 edition of Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill, for example, now sells for over $1,200.

However, for those fortunate enough to snag a bottle, it’s not just an investment — it’s meant to be enjoyed. With tasting notes that evoke the essence of fresh orchard fruits, cinnamon, honey-buttered toast, and freshly ground coffee, this whiskey offers a complex and flavorful experience. Whether you’re keeping it for your collection or sharing it as a luxurious gift, the 2024 Coy Hill High Proof is sure to impress.
